ALABEL, Sarangani (March 10, 2008) – About 800 officials and participants from seven regions ended Saturday (March 8) the first Mindanao Commission on Elections (Comelec) sports fest hosted by Sarangani local government.
"This event is never an easy toil, but an idea of expanding our horizons by engaging in an activity that shall promote friendship and goodwill," said Atty. Michael Abas, acting regional director of Comelec Region XII.
The March 6-8 goodwill games was a spin off of the first Comelec regional sports fest initiated by Abas in Sarangani in December 2005 with then Comelec chair Benjamin Abalos as guest of honor.
"What more we can say but that we all enjoy joyful bonding," Abas said. "These games are for all of us."
The participants were from Region VI-Western Visayas; Region IX-Zamboanga; Region X- Misamis Occidental, Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Camiguin and Bukidnon; Region XI-Compostela Valley Province, Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao City.
Region XII-Sarangani, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato; CARAGA-Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur; ARMM-Tawi-tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Maguindanao, Shariff Kabunsuan province, and Lanao del Sur.
"Pinagmamalaki po namin ang Sarangani," Governor Migs Dominguez told delegates in his welcome statement.
"Napakatahimik ng ating probinsya dahil lahat ng tao nag-iisip kung paano paunlarin, paano pagandahin, at paano magkakaroon ng pagkakaisa," the governor added.
Ball games, track and field, swimming, indoor games and a fun shoot were held in Sarangani sports complex and in General Santos City during the three-day event.
Comelec Region XI director Remlane Tambuang said the goodwill games was an "opportunity for us to realize our value statement that we are driven by respect through sports." (SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE/RGP)
