ALABEL, Sarangani (May 30, 2007) – Governor Migs Dominguez has instructed government employees to be actively involved in the Sarangani-wide coastal clean-up on June 1.
The community-based coastal clean-up coincides with the celebration of June as Philippine Environment Month. It is also simultaneous with the ongoing Sarangani Bay Festival.
"Clean up debris and information must be recorded on standardized data cards to be processed into database needed for developing better solutions to pollution prevention and reduction," Gov. Dominguez said in a memorandum to Capitol employees.
The local government of Sarangani through the joint partnership of the Environmental Conservation and Protection Center and the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office has also mobilized the private sector, national government agencies and non-government organizations.
Participants shall provide an open pit for the disposal of the biodegradable waste that will be collected.
All non-biodegradable materials shall be placed in an area for collection of hauler trucks provided by the municipal office.
Environmentalists have attributed much coastal debris to people, with each person throwing in half kilo of thrash per day.
Sarangani Bay hosts rich marine resources and wildlife. It was declared a protected seascape through Presidential Proclamation No. 756 in 1996. (SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE)
