MAITUM, Sarangani (May 21, 2008) – A member of Davao Camera Club and a Sarangani-based artist prevailed in the region's "most prestigious" photo contest judged Tuesday, May 20.
Davao's Ferdinand Estrella bagged P8,000 and a trophy winning 1st Prize in the "Shootout Category" while Leonardo "Cocoy" Sexcion of Sarangani won the "Open Season Category" with equal prize.
The Maitum Safari Photo Contest is known as "Socsargen's most prestigious photo contest," now a four-year tilt with the latest theme "Colors and Shapes of Maitum". Socsargen is the cluster of South Cotabato, General Santos City and Sarangani.
Sponsors this year are Nida Combis, Lucy Lampa, Marilou Borrega, Mary Jane Borrega, Smart Communications Inc., LandBank, Ideas, and Cresing's Food Products.
The contest received 86 entries in "Shootout," 31 in "Open Season," and nine cellphone pictures.
"We had a difficult time judging the entries because we have very talented and professional photographers," said Michelle Solon who chaired the board of judges.
"Definitely, we looked for the picture that would best represent Maitum," she added.
"Choosing the best quality pictures from 86 entries has been very challenging," photo judge Daniel Evans said.
Maitum celebrated its 49th Foundation Anniversary and 9th Binuyugan Festival last May 5-7 where photographers were accommodated during the three "Shootout" days.
"We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and congratulations to the participating photographers," Mayor Elsie Perrett said.
"You have actually helped us in promoting Maitum by seeing the beauty inside it."
In the "Open Season", Sexcion's "Bangsi Dancers" captured the judges' choice of the contest's theme and technical details such as lighting, composition and sharpness.
"Patience," Sexcion said, was how he was able to capture the vivid image and colors of the festival.
"It is the discipline that all photographers must develop. Otherwise, he won't be at the right time and at the right place to capture the right moment with his camera," he added.
From Davao Camera Club, Estrella's winning entry was "Flashes of Smile" where he photographed a grinning girl drying marinated bangsi (flying fish) at the shores of barangay Old Poblacion.
The marinated bangsi is Maitum's One Town-One Product (OTOP). The OTOP marks the town's unique domestic product that distinguishes Maitum from the other six municipalities in the province.
The 2nd Prize (P5,000) for both "Shootout" and "Open Season" were won by Sexcion while 3rd Prize (P3,000) winners were Shem Longakit (Shootout) and Jesus Tinapay (Open Season), both from Davao Camera Club.
"Perhaps the rule that we apply and really emphasize in the contest is the prohibition of the use of any digital or computerized manipulation of the pictures," contest director Serafin Ramos Jr. said.
"Photos must be in their original form, not cropped nor-super-imposed, retouched or edited in any photo editing software," said Ramos, a native of Maitum.
For "Open Season", entries were taken within Maitum anytime not later than May 7, 2008.
The "Shootout" entries were shot during a photo safari (free board and lodging for non-residents) on May 5-7, 2008.
This year, the contest allowed previous 1st Place winners in any category during the past three Maitum Safari Photo Contests to qualify. Hence, three-time 1st Place winners will then be elevated to the Hall of Fame and barred from joining future contests. (SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE/RGP)
