ALABEL, Sarangani (May 12, 2010) – Incumbent Governor Migs Dominguez is leading against his political opponent Juan Domino for the gubernatorial race in Sarangani Province.
Based on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) consolidated official and unofficial tally of votes from the seven municipalities of the province, it showed that Governor Dominguez is ahead of 6,463 votes compared to Domino.
Dominguez got the highest number of partial and unofficial votes from Malungon, where he posted a total of 5,055 votes higher than Domino.
The Comelec said as of Tuesday night (May 11), Alabel, Maitum, Maasim,and Malapatan were the only municipalities which had official results.
Based on the official result, Governor Dominguez is leading in the canvassing of votes.
Observers believe it is possible that Dominguez’s lead can climb up to 8,000 when the Comelec’s canvassing of votes resumes today
.Contrary to the report of a local television station which said that Domino was leading in the counting of votes, the same data from the Comelec was released and announced in a quick count conducted by Bombo Radyo General Santos and RMN DXMD-Gensan, considered as two dominating radio stations in General Santos City.
The television station only referred to the data released from the municipality of Maitum where Dominguez had only 6,287 votes, lower by 2,323 votes compared to that of Domino’s 8,610 votes.
Meanwhile, in the vice gubernatorial race, Dominguez’s partymate Vice Governor Steve Solon is also leading over his opponent, Fred Basino.
In an official result from Maasim, Solon won with 10,635 votes compared to Basino who only had 6,864 votes.
Same was true in Maitum where Solon also took the lead with 7,140 votes, while Basino only had 6,550.
In the congressional race, Manny Pacquiao was leading against his opponent, Roy Chiongbian.
In Maitum, Pacquiao got 11,037 votes, while Chiongbian had 4,465 votes.
In Maasim, on the other hand, Pacquiao got 5,941 more votes than Chiongbian.
In a report published in Brigada News Philippines on May 11, it said that there was a massive vote buying in Sarangani Province.
The report said voters were given cash money amounting from P300 to P1,000 and sacks of rice.
It added that the voters themselves made the testimony about the massive vote buying in the province.
According to the report, candidates started the massive vote buying onSunday night until the day of the elections.
However, Col. Restito Gatera, provincial director of Sarangani,claimed that the election process in Sarangani was peaceful.He said the PNP has not monitored untoward incidents or anyelection-related violence on May 10.“So far, walay mga untoward incidents nga atong namonitor. Generally,peaceful naman ang proseso ng eleksiyon. We deployed more than 300 PNPpersonnel in the whole province,” Gatera said.
Gatera added that Sarangani had a “well detailed security plan.” Asidefrom the deployed uniformed policemen, his office also coordinatedwith the 73rd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army headed by Col.Edgardo de Leon.
The May 10 election is the first ever automated polls in the history of the country.
In Sarangani Province, it was learned that a total of 6,000 votes were wasted because of the incorrect way of shading ofvoters, thus the ballots were not accepted by the Precinct CountOptical Scan (PCOS) machines. (SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE)
