ALABEL, Sarangani (September 4, 2010) – Two truckloads of workbooksfrom the UnionBank were brought in to Sarangani by men of the 11thMechanized Infantry and staff of Alcantara Foundation (AF) for all Grade II early morning Thursday (September 2).
The books were ferried by a navy ship from Manila to Davao City on September 1 and kept at the Sarangani Agricultural CompanyIncorporated (SACI) warehouse for distribution on September 20 throughout the province.
“These are 17,220 student workbooks to be distributed to all Grade II pupils in the province especially the farthest schools so that we can have a 1:1 pupil-book ratio,” AF executive director Richlie Lyndon Magtulis said.
UnionBank has been giving workbooks for Sarangani Grades I and II since 2008.“There are revisions in these books but has maintained its three-pronged approach- reading comprehension, values, and the spirit of patriotism for the Filipino school children through literature,”Magtulis said.
“We are happy with what we are doing,” said Captain William Rodriguez,commanding officer of 11th Mechanized Infantry.“Aside from our military training and responsibilities as protectorsof the civilians against insurgencies, we wanted to help in some otherways,” Rodriguez said.
“The AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) works with our communitiesfor unity and peace,” 1002nd Brigade commanding officer Col. Rainier Cruz said.
“We are joining government and non-government agencies in a unitedeffort to help improve our communities particularly in education,”Cruz said.
“As A Filipino” is UnionBank’s educational learning system readingprogram composed of a workbook for each pupil in Grades I and II, astory book each section, and a teacher’s manual.
