"Spare civilians" - Gov. Migs

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (June 21, 2009) – Sarangani Governor Migs Dominguez offered his deepest sympathy and vowed justice to the victims of the twin grenade attacks in Maasim poblacion Saturday evening (June 20).

“As I have been repeatedly saying, I abhor any form of violence, especially against civilians,” Governor Dominguez said in a statement.

The Philippine National Red Cross immediately sent supplies of blood for those being treated in various General Santos City hospitals.

On Sunday morning (June 21), the Sarangani Human Resources and Management Office called on all Capitol employees to donate blood at the Philippine National Red Cross in General Santos City.

Gardo Rellon of Maasim poblacion was killed while 32 wounded were rushed to hospitals in General Santos City.

The provincial social welfare and development office deployed social workers for a round-the-clock monitoring of the victims from Saturday evening.

Governor Dominguez who was first to visit the victims at the hospitals said the province will shoulder hospital bills of the victims and provide food and transportation for volunteer watchers.

“We are here to live in peace and harmony. Whoever were behind the cowardly act are utterly wrong if their purpose is to sow fear and terrorize the people of Maasim and Sarangani,” Governor Dominguez said.

“For whatever reason the perpetrators did the dastardly act, there is no justification whatsoever for any attack against civilians and communities wanting to live in peace.”

“Coming on the eve of the town’s 37th Foundation Anniversary and hardly a year after the bloody assault at the town hall,” the governor said, “the latest treacherous attack only unmask the diabolical motives of the group and persons behind the reprehensible incident.”

Yet, Dominguez said, “the show must go on” for the town celebration for peace, harmony and progress.

Among the victims brought to the General Santos City Doctors Hospital were Gardo Rello (deceased), Adrin Salloman, Ingrid Genadiala, Mary Grace Andrade, Romel Candawan, Josephine Mabulak, Arnel Tanaid, Julieta Tanaid, George Tanaid, Flordeliza Tanaid, Caman Ampon, Lyn-lyn Solong and Daniel Adel.

At St. Elizabeth Hospital were Sarah Abbas, Albino Isla, Julie Tanaid, Jun Isla, Archie Isla, Romeo Libron, Jose Gimpayan, Joselito Kilan, Nonito Durano, Benjamin Donado, Jun Kalaw, Junric Remo and Sapdin Dimapunday.

At the Mindanao Medical Center were Florami Lejarso, Jacinto Avila, Din Jalil, Ricardo Sardido, Reymart Jumaac and Rosito Balbuena.

The twin grenade attacks in Maasim Saturday evening that took the life of one civilian and wounded 32 others have once again reared the ugly head of terror in the countryside.

For whatever reason the perpetrators did the dastardly act, there is no justification whatsoever for any attack against civilians and communities wanting to live in peace.

Coming on the eve of the town’s 37th Foundation Anniversary and hardly a year after the bloody assault at the town hall, the latest treacherous attack only unmask the diabolical motives of the group and persons behind the reprehensible incident.

As I have been repeatedly saying, I abhor any form of violence, especially against civilians.

We are here to live in peace and harmony.

Whoever were behind the cowardly act are utterly wrong if their purpose is to sow fear and terrorize the people of Maasim and Sarangani.

On the contrary, these acts of terror will only galvanize our resolve to protect our community and strengthen our unity.
We will not be cowed into fear and submission.

To them I say, spare the civilians. And you will have your day in court if not here, in some other places and time.

To the people of Sarangani and the victims of the grenade explosion, I offer my deepest sympathy and assure them that justice is on the way.

Let not this incident drive us into our cocoons. Let this be the spark that will unite us all.

Walk for Peace kicks off Maasim fest

MAASIM, Sarangani (June 19, 2009) – A thousand people from various sectors, employees of different local government units in Sarangani,the private sector and non-government organizations kicked off Thursday (June 18) the festivities for the 37th Foundation Anniversary and 2nd Kestebeng Festival in Maasim with a five-kilometer Walk for Peace.

Two groups assembled in the opposite barangays of Malbang and Kablacanas starting points and later converged at the municipal hall inpoblacion.

Governor Migs Dominguez along with Lt. Col. Edgardo de Leon, battalion commander of the 73rd Infantry Battalion (IB), and heads of the different departments from the provincial Capitol joined the group from Malbang while Mayor Aniceto Lopez led the group from Kablacan.

Walk for Peace, organized by the 73rd IB stationed in Maasim, is asymbolic event to show the “unity of the tri-people, not only of Maasim, but of Sarangani,” said De Leon.

“Ang mensahe kasi natin dito pagkatapos ng mga hindi magagandang pangyayari, gusto natin ipakita ang mga tao ng Maasim, kahit dito nangyari ang kaguluhan, ay nangunguna sa pagtataguyod ng pagmamahalan at kapayapaan. (The message we are trying to impart is even though there have been many problems in this area, the people in Maasim are still promoting love and peace),” De Leon added.

Walk for Peace opened the town’s festivities which highlighted the ground-breaking ceremony for a Peace Monument.

The monument expected to be inaugurated next year would serve as avenue for a yearly peace covenant of the tri-people. A time capsule which contained the names of the people who attended the Walk forPeace was lowered in the area.

The Kestebeng Festival is an annual event that showcases the continuing advocacy for peace endeavors contributed by individuals and organizations. It also serves as a commemorative celebration of the achievement of peace for future generations.Kestebeng is a Blaan word for unity or peace which is the theme of this yearly event. Pakaradyan Festival: Celebrating harmony

MALAPATAN, Sarangani (June 18, 2009) – Pakaradyan is a Maguindanaon term for “celebration” or “thanksgiving”.

The week-long festivalborrows its name from the Muslim mostly living in the interiors of Malapatan, and lends it to the numbering indigenous Blaans and Christian lowlanders in town.

On its 4th annual celebration of the Pakaradyan Festival this year,harmony amongst Christians, Muslims and Lumads has bred them life andl iving for four decades now: Malapatan is celebrating its 40thFoundation Anniversary with the theme “Moving Forward for the Progress of Malapatan” to culminate on June 21.

At the Tribal Day celebration Wednesday (June 17) Blaan villagers gathered at the Maguindanao-inspired municipal landscape, with a number of colorful silat (Maguindanao umbrella), buntings and Muslim ornaments of the stage.Blaan elders and children wore their traditional dress while listening to their elders.

Today, these elders find the opportunity to remember and inspire again the pioneers of the community.“Let us continue to live in harmony,” municipal tribal chieftain Jimmy Bagit said.The tribal council of Malapatan wishes for the tribal sectoral representation of the indigenous people.“We, your Moro leaders, will carry on your dignity and rights till theend,” Vice Mayor George Sambaga told them.Sambaga is among the pioneering Muslim families who migrated in Malapatan long before it became a municipality. He said one has tolearn the culture of other people to understand them and live withthem.“Our task in the government is to seek assistance from organizationsthat would bring us all to progress,” Sambaga said.

When the Muslims migrated to Buayan (General Santos City) and to Malapatan from Kuta Wato (Cotabato) through the sea, native inhabitants, mostly Blaans, just went further inland.

The indigenousBlaan are highlanders. Hunting and planting have been their source of food.The word Malapatan was coined from two Blaan words, mala (pepper) and fatan (place). Pepper has been abundant in this place.

In June 21, 1969, Malapatan was declared as a municipality separating itself from its mother town, Glan.

At the municipal ground, a group of Moro women display their malong for everyone. Next to them are the dream weavers’ display center where visitors can find beautifully woven mats in traditional patterns. They are made of romblon leaves from trees Blaan families grow for such purpose; and the tinagtag, a Maguindanaon traditional delicacy.These nurture the culture and people of Malapatan for business and history. GUMASA, Sarangani (June 1, 2009) – Christopher Eyao (center) gestures with his “EDGE” teammates Marcial Catanggue and Mona Liza Ambasa as they bag the P50,000 cash and medal prizes during the awarding ceremony Saturday, May 30. The team won against 11 other teams in the 180-kilometer adventure race across the province for two days from Maitum to Glan as one of the highlights of the 4th Sarangani Bay Festival with the theme, “Celebrating and protecting the treasures of the bay”.
