ALABEL, Sarangani (July 31, 2008) – The province of Sarangani has been chosen by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) national selection committee of Gawad KALASAG as recipient of the Best Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC).
Glenn Rabonza, NDCC executive officer, invited Governor Migs Dominguez to receive the Plaque of Recognition during the NDCC's Gawad KALASAG awarding ceremonies to be given by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday, August 1, 12:00 noon at the Rizal Hall, Malacañang Palace.
"We bestow (Gawad KALASAG) annually in recognition of the local government's exemplary achievements in the field of disaster risk management," said Rabonza, who is also the administrator of the Office of Civil Defense.
KALASAG stands for "KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan."
Kalasag is the Filipino term for "shield" used by early Filipinos as a means of protection from attacks of enemies or harmful animals.
Relatedly, Gawad KALASAG was conceived to protect or shield high risk communities against hazards by encouraging participation of various stakeholders in designing and implementing Disaster Risk Management programs.
Hermelo Latoja, PDCC action officer and provincial social welfare and development officer, described the award as "a great pride for Sarangans."
"But it's not easy to receive such because you have to do more efforts to sustain and innovate what is best with the involvement of all stakeholders," Latoja added.
The Gawad KALASAG awarding ceremonies is to be held jointly with that of Metrobank Foundation's Country's Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS) and NDCC's Millennium Schools Competition winners. (JR/SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE)
