ALABEL, Sarangani (June 1, 2008) – Volunteers ended Friday (May 30) their 2008 summer "Reading is Fun" program that helped incoming Grade III pupils enhance their reading skills.
"I am very happy with what I did last summer," said Abellesa Lestones, 15, of Maasim.
Lestones and 600 other volunteers spent three hours per day for 20 days with kids who want to improve their reading skills.
2,758 kids from all over Sarangani province benefited from the program.
The 600 "big brothers and sisters" were known as "ate" and "kuya" to the incoming Grade III pupils in the program.
Lestones, "Ate Darling" to kids, said she feels ecstatic every time the kids will say thank you to her after their reading class. Her three nephews attended the reading class.
"It is our desire to broaden the opportunity for education in Sarangani," said Cecile Dominguez, executive director of Alcantara Foundation (AF), one of the partners in implementing the program.
Dominguez, 25, recounted her experience in her high school days when she also volunteered to teach kids how to read.
"I know high school students can already help in mentoring kids how to read," said Dominguez.
"Our own little ways will long be remembered by the children we helped this summer," said Aniceto Lopez III, the Panlalawigang Pederasyon ng Sangguniang Kabataan (PPSK) president who is also an ex-officio member of the provincial board.
Lopez, 17, pointed out that most of the volunteers admitted that the program was tiring but almost all committed to be back next year.
The program was conceptualized by the different youth organizations of Sarangani.
"We have a revolution of education in Sarangani province," said Governor Migs Dominguez.
Gov. Migs said that the spirit of volunteerism is now very strong in Sarangani.
"Naipakita natin na ang sigla ng pag-asa ng Pilipinas ay nasa Sarangani," the governor added.
Vice Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon, on the other hand, said that volunteerism is priceless.
"What you did is priceless. Hindi mababayaran ang inyong ginawa," Solon told the volunteers during the culmination program Friday (May 30).
"You have participated in a program that is the only one in the country. No one can take away from you the fact that you belong to first batch of volunteers of a noble program," said Ms. Dominguez to the roaring applause of the volunteers.
The "Reading is Fun" was funded by the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) to improve the reading skills of pupils while intensifying relationships between the youth body and Department of Education (DepEd).
The Sarangani Big Brother "Reading is Fun" was supported by the seven municipalities of the province, AF, PPSK, Havaianas, Globe and Sarangani Highlands. (SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE/RIO)
