Tuna Congress

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (September 2, 2006) – Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. (left) and Sarangani Governor Migs Domiguez discuss the future of the tuna industry at the 8th National Tuna Congress Saturday (September 2). The tuna handline fishing industry in the areas of Sarangani, General Santos City and Sultan Kudarat employs approximately 30,000 fishermen-crews. They fish in the Philippine and Indonesian waters for large yellow fin and big eye tuna. They supply fresh and frozen sashimi and generate about US$ 70 million annually. The handline sector’s daily tuna unloading at the General Santos Fish is about 80 metric tons. (Photo by SARANGANI INFORMATION OFFICE/CAS)
